10 October marks SmackDown’s 15th anniversary. This is my second article, listing some of the greatest moments in SmackDown history. The previous time we looked at the favourite SmackDown moments of some WWE superstars and divas. This time, the material comes from YOUR responses on Twitter. Here’re five moments that the SmackDown fans will never forget!
5. Steve Austin blows up the DX Express
In April 2000, The Rock was feuding with the reigning WWF champion – Triple H for the title. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin returned from an injury and true to his anti-authority character stood against DX. The DX buss paid the price.
4. Eddie Guerrero vs. John Cena Parking Brawl
In 2003 a “Latino Heat” Parking Lot Brawl for the US Championship would actually be an acceptable type of a match. In that era, wrestling was less concerned with being politically correct and more willing to do anything, as long as the entertainment value was high. Entertainment is exactly what this epic fight between John Cena and Eddie Guerrero brought to the table.
3. Jeff Hardy’s Pyro Accident
I don’t think anyone could forget the moment when in January 2009, Jeff Hardy was involved in what seemed to be a pyro accident on SmackDown. Although it turned out to be part of a storyline, featuring a feud with Matt Hardy, it still remains one of WWE’s most unforgettable OMG moments.
2. Edge Cashes in His MITB on the Undertaker
There is a reason why Edge was know as The Ultimate Opportunist. The Rater-R Superstar was the first ever Mr. Money in the Bank. He cashed in his contract on the already bloody and injured Undertaker, who had just competed in a brutal steel cage match and had gotten attacked by a vicious Mark Henry. This is how Edge became the World Heavyweight Champion for the first time. And it all happened on SmackDown. Can you believe that?!
1. John Cena Debuts
On 27 June 2002 John Cena made his in-ring debut under the giant fist of SmackDown. Back then no one could have guessed that the young underdog, who came out of nowhere to stand up against Kurt Angle, would 12 years later be a 15 times World Champion. Starting from “ruthless aggression”, Cena built a legacy that is ruled by Hustle, Loyalty and Respect. Looking at the boy in this video an thinking that he’d later become the face of the WWE and the leader of the Cenation feels almost surreal.
