“Hercules” comes to Japan. The Rock meets the Great Muta in Tokyo.

After making a surprise appearance at SmackDown’s 15 anniversary show, The Rock went back to promoting his latest Hollywood action flick – “Hercules”. Last night  the People’s Champ was giving a conference in Tokyo, when he got interrupted by Japanese legend the Great Muta.

The Rock and the Great Muta’s “rivalry” dates a few years back. In 2002 the two of them met, during The Scorpion King promotional tour. It’s said that the Great Muta was trying to arrange a match between himself and the Rock. He also wanted to develop the relationship between All Japan Pro Wrestling and the WWE. However, the angle was never realised.

Before flying out to Japan for the premiere of “Hercules” the Rock mentioned the Great Muta in a tweet:

The Great Muta did appear at the Rock’s press conference. The two of them exchanged greetings and posed for photos. It was a great PR move, which attracted a lot of attention on social media.

As a side note, I’d just like to mention that the idea of making inter-promotional connection between the WWE and other wrestling organisations, much like it happens in the indies, could be interesting. Imagine if few times a year WWE superstars have a py-per-view where they face wrestlers from other large promotion like All Japan Pro Wrestling, Ring of Honour or Dragon Gate USA. The storylines for those events would work as meta storylines that exist separately over the storylines developing on the usual WWE programming. That could bring a breath of fresh air to the WWE. I’m not suggesting a full-out war between promotions because the WWE has done that already but a flavour of something new, won’t hurt once in a while, right?

Would you like to see WWE superstars face wrestlers from other promotions? Are you excited for the Rock’s latest movie? Share your thoughts in the comment section, on FB or Twitter!
