Last night, Brad Maddox made an in-ring appearance at a live event in Milwaukee. He lost to Zack Ryder after getting hit with the Rough Ryder.
According to the Live Event reviews I came across today, Brad got a drum roll and spotlight entrance but the crowd didn’t respond too eagerly. The common opinion on the match seems to be that it wasn’t particularly impressive and felt out of place. That’s not too surprising as it was a short match with no storyline to back it up.
I’ve got the impression that the WWE doesn’t really know what to do with Maddox. He’s been off TV for the past year. Back in October 2014, Brad made another live event appearance and also lost two matches in one night. At the time, the idea for him seemed to be to return in a a much darker gimmick of a desperate man, who lost everything and is ready to do whatever it takes to get his dream back. It was an intriguing idea but it never got put into practice.
The drum roll entrance this time around talks of a much more pompous gimmick. It’s fitting for the type of a character Brad Maddox was when he worked as the RAW GM. The look matches the persona as well.
I don’t know why the WWE would want to go back to Brad’s old gimmick, knowing that the October idea was much more appealing. Maddox has proven time and time again that he’s a talented actor, so he can work with any role, thrown at him. However a cocky and narcissistic office worker, dressed in a shirt and a jumper, who instantly becomes subservient upon seeing his boss is a far less promising gimmick than a disgruntled and edgy man, who can snap at any moment.
Nonetheless, Brad Maddox seems to be in great physical shape and getting back on the road is a step in the right direction.
I hope this is not another one-off appearance for Brad. Gimmicks can change but for that you at least have to be on the radar. Once he’s back full-time he can work his way up.
