Tye Dillinger vs. Baron Corbin
The match never happened as Apollo Crews rushed into an attack on Corbin and Tye simply walked off at the sight of it.
For the first time since he arrived, Crews finally got some fully-invested reaction from the fans. The chants were deafening. This is because Apollo did the best thing a face could to rise up – he brutally attacked Baron Corbin – the heel people actually hate.
This feud will be interesting, mostly because of the possible outcomes. Is the WWE going to finally give Corbin that last push, which will put him in the main event, or is Apollo going to become yet another superstar to leap over him.
Bayley and the Hype Bros def. Blake, Murphy & Alexa Bliss
The energy in the audience for that match was incredible and it was all thanks to the Hype Bros. With Mojo as a cheerleader, the crowd was even singing.
The ladies weren’t just an accessory in the match. Alexa Bliss saved it once with an interference and later on Bayley delivered a Belly to Baley to Murphy, setting him up for the Hype Bros winning finisher. I hadn’t seen a good mixed tag team match in a very long time. NXT delivered as usual.
Bliss ran off with Bayley’s title, which inevitably set them up for a title match. However, it’s obvious Alexa won’t be winning that one. It’s too early in Bayley’s long-awaited title reign.
Nia Jax def. Deonna
I watched that match and the one word I wrote down in my notepad was “domination”. There was nothing else to it – simply pure domination on the part of Nia Jax, which eventually led to her victory.
Surrounding the match, there were a couple of interesting segments. Nia Jax had a run in with Bayley and Alexa backstage and the title seemed to catch her eye. However, before the match we saw Eva Marie talk to Nia Jax. I believe Nia might be hunting that title for the incompetent Eva.
Dawson & Wilder def. The Vaudevillains
Dawson and Wilder took the titles off of the Vaudevillains. In the process, they build a strong heel image for themselves. Their style involves targeting a specific body part and causing pain until the person gives up. Seeing the face scream in pain for 2/3 of the match does the job when it comes to building the heel.
However, The Vaudevillains defeated themselves in my opinion. It was yet another case of this ridiculous “tag to injured partner”. It makes no sense and it cost Enzo and Big Cass quite a few matches.
I think the Vaudevillains’reign was wasted. It took them long to get to the top and when they did, they had already lost some heat. Then, their time as champions remained uneventful. They could have been booked much better.
Samoa Joe/Finn Balor
Samoa Joe explained he was upset with Finn Balor for not fighting Regal to grant Joe the title match he wanted. Finn came out to confront him and it all ended badly for the champ, as Joe locked the Coquina Clutch on him in the middle of the ring.
It’s interesting with this duo, as their rivalry unfolds parallel to the Crews/Corbin one. The winner of either will determine the victor in the other, forming the next face/heel pairing for the NXT Championship.
