Alberto Del Rio vs. Roman Reigns
Since the Usos, Ambrose and the entire League of Nations were there, this match was pretty much useless. The wresting was good but not breath-taking. The bout ended with no contest and set up the tag team main event. Therefore, Smackdown’s first match was nothing but a filler.
It’s a shame that SmackDown is not “the wrestling show” any more. It’s simply used to fill in some gaps with action that you won’t miss, even if you don’t watch it. It’s also a shame that all titles and storylines are playing a second fiddle to the WWE title. Del Rio, Ambrose, Owens and the Usos are all more involved in Reigns’ feud with Sheamus than in their own rivalries.
Dolph Ziggler def. Tyler Breeze
Sadly, there is no progress with Dolph and Tyler. It’s the same old game – Ziggler’s knee is “injured” in every match and Breeze is just playing an expendable heel.
The performance in the ring can’t be faulted. Both Prince Pretty and the Show Off are much more than good. However, they are not given anyhitng to work with. This feud is void of any meaning and is leading nowhere. Practically, it doesn’t matter who comes on top because the victory won’t bring them anything.
The Lucha Dragons def. The New Day
The Lucha Dragons are good, very good. It can even be said that Kalisto is incredible. However, the New Day cannot be outdone when it comes to mic work. They entertain and that’s what the WWE wants. So, the champions will retain on Sunday. No one can replace them at the moment.
I wonder why Xavier Woods wrestles only when the New Day are booked to lose. He’s not even a rookie any more but he seems to be the only one willing to take the fall for the team.
IC Title Contract Signing
That was one awkward contract signing. Owens had a a lawyer, who was sporting Kane’s suit. It seems that anyone, who’s affiliated with the Authority, must wear a plain black suit and a red tie.
Owens made some sort of an appearance with a sneak attack but got nowhere. In the end, the rivalry remained as underdeveloped as it was to begin with. Sadly, Roman’s issues have overshadowed the IC Title feud.
Ryback def. The Ascension
I thought it couldn’t get any worse for the Ascension but last night on SmackDown, Konnor and Viktor jobbed to Ryback, both at the same time. It’s one thing when a team puts another team over but when a team takes the fall, in order for a single midcarder to gain some momentum in an uninteresting feud, then we have a serious issue.
It’s obvious that Rusev will use Lana to win at TLC. It’s also obvious that this rivalry won’t go anywhere. It’s just very sad that the Ascension are so underutilized. When you thnk that they were the most dominant team on NXT…
Becky Lynch def. Paige
This match went against any logic. Although Charlotte had betrayed both, Paige and Becky still fought each other, as if there was a reason to it. In the end, Charlotte helped Becky win, which worked against everything she had done over the last few weeks.
Overall, the impression I get is that the Divas Division has no goal. The divas perform character turns and then work against them the next week. The booking is inconsistent and it doesn’t help the division gain credibility.
Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose & The Usos def. The League of Nations
As with any SmackDown episode, the first match led to the last match of the night. Reigns and friends prevailed, although the League of Nations needed the victory more. Probably, the WWE was going for “the winner at the last show loses at the PPV”. However, I still think it was the wrong choice.
The League of Nations is a new faction. It needs to be established before it gains any credibility. Having them constantly lose to Reigns and his family doesn’t help. Roman, Ambrose and the Usos aren’t even a team! They should easily lose to a legitimate stable. The fact that Reigns is given the upper hand, as if it’s just him and Sheamus involved, makes me think that the League of Nations will be overall underutilized.
