A couple of new matches were added to the already exciting TakeOver card, as two of the biggest NXT newcomers clashed and the women of NXT decided who’ll challenge Asuka for her title. Also, one of WWE’s latest recruits made their debut. That and much more! Let’s talk NXT!
Gargano & Ciampa def. TM-61
The Mighty Don’t Kneel made their official NXT debut under the name TM-61. They are the first of WWE’s latest batch of recruits to debut on TV and that’s no surprise, looking at their impressive resume.
This was one of the best tag team matches I’ve seen in a while. I thought the TM-61were going to get the victory since it was their debut but Gargano and Ciampa were on a roll.
Gargano’s amazing ability to twist into a new move midmotion made the match that much more exciting. And Ciampa was so enthusiastic that he even sent himself out of the ring with the momentum of his high knee. There’s no shame in losing to a team like them.
Austin Aries/Shinsuke Nakamura
Austin Aries’promo was a bit too long and it made it sound a bit clunky at times. When he landed the rhetorical “but how do you prove your greatness?” I felt as if I was listening to a life coach’ scripted speech.
Shinsuke made me laugh before he even cracked his actual joke. Having been implicitly accused of spotlight hogging and then interrupting a guy and making a full, slow entrance with posing was brilliantly hilarious.
Nakamura doesn’t really speak the language but he oozes charisma. The WWE has no one like him on any roster and they must make sure they don’t lose him.
No Way Jose def. ???
No Way Jose had a forgettable match against a nameless opponent. The crowd couldn’t care less. This character was doomed before he made his debut. You can’t expect anyone with that name and that gimmick to get over.
Nia Jax def. Carmella & Alexa Bliss
This was a surprisingly good match. Alexa Bliss hid and ran, she picked her moments but when she jumped in, she was brilliant in her aggression.
Carmella impressed me the most though. She brought the energy up and she delivered in the ring. If someone had told me a year ago that she would have gotten that good, I would have laughed at them. Great improvement! Carmella has a great future in the business, it’s only that Nia Jax fits better in the Asuka feud.
Asuka vs. Nia Jax will be an intriguing match. Both women have been presented as scary and intimidating but for different reasons. I still think Asuka should retain but Nia will give her a challenge like no other.
